The lights and fan don’t work

If the fan and lights don’t work, the issue is almost certainly electrical.

NOTE: IF YOU AREN’T CONFIDENT WORKING WITH WIRES AND LIVE CIRCUITS GET SOMEBODY WHO IS CONFIDENT OR AN ELECTRICIAN TO CHECK IT OUT FOR YOU.

Take the following steps:

1. Check the circuit breaker to make sure that a fuse isn’t blown.
2. Remove the switch cover plate and screws to reveal the electrical box.
3. Use a non contact voltage tester to see if power is making it to the switch.
4. If the power isn’t making it to the switch and the breaker is fine then you need to contact an electrician to figure out the problem.
5. If power is making it then for safety purposes, turn off the switch on the circuit breaker that goes to the ceiling fan in question.
6. Use a voltage tester on the screw terminals to ensure they aren’t charged and are safe to handle.
7. Unscrew the wires from the terminals and straighten them with pliers.
8. Connect the two wires by twisting them together.
9. Turn the breaker back on, if the fan turns on the problem is the switch and it needs replaced. Otherwise continue.
10. Next you’re going to have to check the wires to the fan, so if your fan doesn’t have a hanging hook you’ll  probably need help.
11. Turn off the switch on the circuit breaker that goes to the ceiling fan in question.
12. Loosen the screws on the fan housing and lower the fan.
13. Use the non contact voltage tester to make sure nothing is hot. Don’t continue if it is.
14. Check the wires from the fan and make sure they are connected firmly to those in the box. Tighten the nuts as needed.
15. Also check any connections within the fan housing and those for the pull chain.
16. Put the fan housing back up and screw it back up.
17. Turn the power back on on the breaker and at the switch. If the fan still doesn’t work continue.
18. Turn off the switch on the circuit breaker that goes to the ceiling fan in question.
19. Take the fan down completely and turn the power back on on the breaker.
20. Turn the switch for the fan to the ‘on’ position.
21. Use a non contact voltage tester to see if power is making it to the box. If it is not, then the issue is with the wires between the switch and fan and you need to contact an electrician to fix the issue most likely.
22. If the issue is not with the power then it is probably something electrical within the fan and it will need repaired or replaced.
